Paris, Nicky, and their mom Kathy are sliving in new campaign, and all the other fashion news you missed this week
Despite the end of the year creeping up very rapidly (thank god) it’s been a busy week for fashion. The week started with Timothée Chalamet dressing up as Harry Styles on SNL and Naomi Campbell’s hazmat suit becoming immortalised at Bath’s Fashion Museum.
Then came the plethora of end of year SS21 collections. First up was Saint Laurent who took to the desert because, well… social distancing. Elsewhere, Bottega Veneta put on a 90s inspired show and McQueen dropped an eerie short film.
In the realm of collection drops, legendary activist Angela Davis launched a collection with Los Angeles-based label Renowned LA, inspired by several Black political leaders. Playwright Jeremy O. Harris also added designer to his list of accolades, dropping his capsule collection with SSENSE.
Kim Jones also gave us a sneak peek into his first collection for Fendi, which is set to debut during Couture week in Paris on January 27. Stay tuned for that one and click through the gallery below to check out the rest of this week’s news.

Tommy Hilfiger joins forces with Sports Banger
Launched this week, Tommy’s Drop Shop is American label Tommy Hilfiger’s latest initiative, which sees European creatives and independent designs collaborate with the brand and create their own fresh interpretations of the label. First up, is cult London designer Sports Banger who created a series of looks that twist the label’s iconic branding on its head. According to Banger, Tommy got in touch when it clocked his bootlegged homage to the brand circa his AW20 show back in February. Check out the full collection here.

Browns unpacks sex and relationships with Karley Sciortino
As the latest person to take over Browns Residency Series, unfiltered writer and creator of Slutever Karley Sciortino hosted a live Q&A discussing all things sex and relationships. In a discussion moderated by Lynette Nylander, the American writer spoke about everything from what to wear on a first date to the most common mistakes people make in their sex and dating lives. Sciortino also curated a 34-piece edit of garments ranging from Versace to Jacquemus and Jil Sander. Read the conversation here and shop the edit here.

Daily Paper and Off-White created Ghana’s first skatepark
Skating will seriously never die, so it comes at no surprise that there is a worldwide demand for skate parks. Enter: Daily Paper and Off-White, who as of a few days ago have announced their project to build Ghana’s first-ever functioning skate park. Set to be positioned in the heart of Accra, Virgil Abloh and the co-founders of Daily Paper are also collaborating with collective Surf Ghana and studio Limbo Accra for the initiative. To help raise funds for the construction, the Amsterdam-based brand has created a collab t-shirt with Alboh and a capsule collection with Surf Ghana which will launch at a pop-up in Ghana on December 21. The global release of the collection will be on January 15 via the Daily Paper website.

Miu Miu reveal first-ever upcycled collection
The past year has seen many luxury brands push to a more sustainable future and now you can add Miu Miu to that list. First previewed in October, the label’s latest collection features a series of 80 one-off designs which have been completely upcycled. Each look has been repurposed using pieces from the 30s to the 80s, which were found in stores worldwide and restored by hand.

All I want for Christmas is Supreme’s Mariah tee
As the reigning queen of Christmas and the only person who can appear on the charts year after year for 26 years, Ms Mariah deserves all the tributes she gets. This year, that comes in the form of a Supreme t-shirt. Released on December 17, the Supreme Winter 2020 T-shirt collection includes a shirt with an image of Mariah, along with a note she wrote to Supreme – which reads “To Supreme, Merry Christmas baby! Xo Mariah”. Could it get more iconic?

The Hiltons for Valentino? That’s hot.
After pioneering the early 2000s style that every TikTok teen now embodies – think Juicy Couture, low-rise jeans, and baby bags – it does not seem like Paris Hilton plans to retire from the role of fashion icon anytime soon. Joined by her sister Nicky and mother Kathy, Paris’ latest gig is a campaign for Italian luxury fashion house Valentino. Shot in Los Angeles’ Hotel Bel-Air, where the family once resided, the images see them dressed in co-ordinated Valentino looks with each carrying the new Valentino Garavani Roman Stud bag.

Judy Chicago designs a bag for Dior
For the fifth instalment of Dior Lady Art, Dior invited 10 different artists and collectives to reinterpret the iconic Lady Dior handbag. Among those selected is American feminist artist Judy Chicago. In a video discussing her bag, Chicago explains how she drew inspiration from her own past works – including ‘Let it All Hang Out’, ‘Christine of Sweden’ and ‘Queen Victoria’ – to create psychedelic colourful prints. “One of the things I really like about the bag was that my art could continue to teach women’s history, through purses,” Chicago explained.

Costume designer Ruth E. Carter gets her own exhibition
Opening on December 17, ‘Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design’ is a brand new exhibition at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta which celebrates the life and work of Ruth E. Carter. As a history-maker who became the first black person to win an Oscar in the category of costume design for her work in Black Panther, the exhibition will feature some of her greatest looks.

Raf Simons finally(!) launches his own shopping site
Named after Raf Simons’ tenth-anniversary collection in 2005, ‘History of My Word’ is a platform which will sell an array of items curated by Simons himself. As described on the site, the items “reflect the designer’s point of view, aesthetic, and philosophy” and will include everything from homeware to literature, clothing, collaborations, and unique and limited edition pieces. For now, the site has dropped 45 unique blankets, as well as candles you will absolutely never burn and a collection of books.

Lingerie designer Michaela Stark puts her spin on Kara bags
Subversive lingerie designer Michaela Stark is the latest designer featured in Kara’s visual You Be You series – spotlighting how different creatives around the world interpret Kara in their own way. For the project, Stark utilises her signature unconvential undergarments – accentuating common insecurities of the body – this time with Kara's metal chain-link bag straps to accent the lingerie as chokers, belting, and draped around the her arms. Gucci joins forces with queer initiative MQBMBQ
Following the release of its office party-themed holiday gift guide, Gucci has teamed up with My Queer Blackness, My Black Queerness – an organisation fighting against the discrimination of Black and queer communities – to launch The Black Jigsaw Project. The limited edition drop features work from NYC-born illustrator Ggggrimes and Ghanaian painter Kwesi Botchway, who each designed custom jigsaw puzzles for the project. As for Gucci, each person in the artworks is depicted in clothes from the Italian label’s Epilogue collection. The puzzles are available here, with all profits going to Italian non-profit Movimento Identità Trans, which seeks to fight for trans peoples’ rights.

Kaia Gerber and Cole Sprouse wear Coach's newest collab
Coach dropped its newest collab, which this time sees the label join forces with Disney and legendary artist Keith Haring. Modelled by the likes of Kaia Gerber, Cole Sprouse, Kōki, Xiao Wen Ju, and Myles O’Neal, the offering includes leather bags with Mickey Mouse ears, a shearling jacket, totes, and sweatshirts – also featuring Haring's signature Andy Warhol Mickey Mouse print. The collection is set to release January 4 here.

Feng Chen Wang pays tribute to workers with Levi's
A tribute to industrial workers returning home to their loved ones, Levi’s new collection with Chinese designer Feng Chen Wang is elevating typical blue and black workwear with bright red, inspired by the Chinese New Year. The range includes four jackets, three pairs of jeans, and a bucket hat – all in hand-dyed denim, and featuring experimental detailing. Erdem made a move to a more inclusive future
This week it was announced that from here on out, Erdem will offer more inclusive sizing for all future collections. As one of the few high-end labels offering anything above a UK16, the designer’s line will now go up to a UK22. Positive news for an industry that continues to lag behind when it comes to representing different body shapes and sizes: let’s hope more brands follow suit. Selfridges is spotlighting new designers with Yasmin Sewell
Seven students and graduates from University of Westminister’s Menswear MA course have been selected by brand consultant Yasmin Sewell to help launch her brand new project in collaboration with Selfridges. Named RECHARGEX7, the project sees students upcycle luxury pieces of clothing from Sewell’s wardrobe, which are then sold at Selfridges – with all proceedings going back to the students. The designers, who all also received a mentoring from Sewell, include Guangyu Li, Georgia Wilson, Zoli, Yunn, Catherine Hudson, Wesley Stuart Hartwel and Sankim. You can shop the collection here.
