Converse is set to launch an innovative gender-neutral line

Entitled Converse Shapes, the inclusive line puts body type before the binary

Over the course of the last few years, fashion has taken steps to becoming much more inclusive, with the runways increasingly becoming filled with models of every race, gender, size and ability. Now, in a bid to become more inclusive itself, Converse announces the launch of a new line of genderless clothing entitled Converse Shapes.

With the brand pioneering one of the first non-binary sneakers, the Chuck Taylor All Star, way back in 1917, the move makes sense. On offer are five styles designed less for gender and more for body type, with each oversized crew-neck tee, hoodie, sweatshirt featuring adjustable panels allowing them to be extended.

Alongside the progress made in terms of body inclusivity, Shapes also pushes towards sustainability. Crafted from 50 per cent recycled and 50 per cent organic cotton, each item will be cut in a way that dramatically reduces the fabric waste.

“When starting design from a non-traditional place, there are endless opportunities,” Jonathan Tappan, VP of apparel at Converse, told WWD. “By bringing functionality, inclusivity, and comfort to everyday clothes, we believe we can really change the game.”

Converse Shapes will be released later this year.
