Slumped against a wall, a young Joaquin Pheonix took centre stage for Prada’s SS97 campaign at the ripe old age of 22.

Revisiting the cult men who’ve starred in Prada campaigns

From Joaquin Phoenix to Frank Ocean, Ezra Miller and John Malkovich, these are our favourite Prada men’s campaigns

For those of you who failed to notice, Frank Ocean debuted as the newest face of Prada on Wednesday. Announced through the Italian label’s Instagram, the news has really taken us a full day to recover from.

Inspired by the already iconic image, we thought the best way to honour the Dazed cover star’s move into fashion was to look back on the many, many other times Prada has enlisted the cult stars of the day to feature in its campaigns.

From a then relatively unknown 22-year-old Joaquin Phoenix in 1996 to Willem Dafoe and Gary Oldman in 2012, and Ezra Miller in 2013, Prada continues to prove itself as the gateway for Hollywood’s bright young things and established greats, always casting talents with a vision as singular as its own. Frank Ocean, of course, is not an actor, but here’s hoping the musician’s inclusion symbols a more diverse campaign line up will be on the agenda in the future – in more ways than one.

Take a look at our favourites in the gallery above.
