Joaquin Phoenix will wear one suit this awards season to save waste

His decision to wear the custom Stella McCartney suit is a comment on fashion’s role in our current climate emergency

Celebrities continue to make the red carpet their political arena, using it as a space to take on issues from #metoo to trans rights. The latest example of this comes in the form of Joaquin Phoenix, who has pledged to wear the same Stella McCartney black tux all award season to save on waste, in what could be seen as a protest of fashion’s role in the growing climate emergency.

The British designer showed her support for Phoenix’s decision on Twitter yesterday writing, “This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet,” she explained. “He has also chosen to wear this same Tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud to join forces with you.”

A vegan, long-time animal rights and climate activist, the actor wore the custom piece to the Golden Globes the night before last, where he picked up Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in the Joker. McCartney has long been a leading voice in environmental activism and an advocate for sustainable fashion, designing collections which exempt the use of leather and fur and investing in innovative, environmentally friendly materials.

With the climate emergency one of the biggest talking points of last year, Phoenix used his acceptance speech to speak on issues of climate change, noting the Australian wildfires, which have pillaged the country recently. Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett also used their acceptance speech as a time to link back to the fires, while a number of celebrities have taken to social media to raise awareness over the issue.

Despite this, however, others did not see the value in Phoenix’s contribution to climate activism. Replying to McCartney’s tweet, one user wrote, “I cannot believe how out of touch this tweet is”, while another, seemingly mocking the actor wrote, “The humanity ... the same tux for the ENTIRE awards season ... *wiping the tears from my eyes*”.
