With just over a week to go until one of the most important general elections of our time, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn continued his tour of the country this weekend, showing up in the coastal Yorkshire towns of Whitby and Scarborough in a custom suit jacket bearing the party’s ‘For the Many, Not the Few’ slogan.
Thought to be a gift from Leeds North East representative Fabian Hamilton, who presented him with it at an NHS rally the previous evening, Corbyn explained: “He has a friend of his who is a tailor. He gave me this jacket and it’s quite splendid. It almost fits – I don’t know if we need the jacket to grow or me to shrink.” The jacket is the work of Bradford-based Labour supporter Imran Khan, who decided to make it after David Cameron told Corbyn to “get a proper suit”.
Appearing as pinstripes from far away, the words were subtly stitched vertically down the jacket in red thread, with the whole look finished with the red ribbon created to mark World Aids Day, which took place yesterday. Meanwhile, Boris Johnson continues to look like he got dressed in the dark before being dragged through a hedge backwards (with his Vetements-esque jacket nowhere to be seen despite recent dropping temperatures).
Looking decidedly less awkward holding a portion of chips than then-Prime Minister Theresa May did ahead of 2017’s election, Corbyn offered each of the photographers that had assembled to take his picture on Whitby’s seafront one, joking that the chips were “for the many, there you go.”
Last week, voter registration surged after Stormzy posted an impassioned statement about why he was backing Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party on Instagram. “There are several reasons as to why I’m voting for (Corbyn)... for me, he is the first man in a position of power who is committed to giving the power back to the people. I think Boris Johnson is a sinister man with a long record of lying,” he wrote, before urging his followers to go out, do their own research, and make up their own minds about who to vote for.
