Anthony Vaccarello takes Saint Laurent menswear to the beach for SS20

The designer’s latest collection for the house was presented in Malibu

After kicking off in Shanghai with Prada’s latest menswear collection, the SS20 show season continued with Saint Laurent. After presenting his first standalone menswear collection last year in New York for SS19, this time designer Anthony Vaccarello headed to LA. Here’s what you missed from last night’s show.

THERE WERE LOTS OF FAMILIAR FACES ATTENDING

Duh, it was Malibu. So, with that said the unofficial Queen of Malibu Miley Cyrus was there along with the likes of Luka Sabbat, Laura Dern, Vincent Gallo, and Hailey Bieber. Oh, that’s without mentioning new campaign face Keanu Reeves. Just look at his face.

THE SHOW WAS LITERALLY ON THE BEACH

A wise person (read: Nicki Minaj) once said “Let’s go to the beach, each/ let’s go get a wave” and that’s exactly what the designer did for SS20. Taking over the beach at Paradise Cove, the set was an extremely chic black boardwalk right next to the crashing waves. Guests were given Saint Laurent flip-flops and sipped on branded coconuts, of course.

MICK JAGGER WAS THE INSPIRATION

In particular, his looks from the Rolling Stones’ 1975 tour. Posting an image of the singer on his Instagram before the show, the starting point for Vaccarello was after meeting Jagger before his upcoming tour. “He showed me his wardrobe and I was particularly attracted by the details, the colours, the attitude,” he says. This manifested in the form of sheer tops that hung off the models, skinny scarves and ties, and tailoring in silk and satin. Jagger even allowed Vaccarello access to his vintage YSL pieces to study them closely and rework them into the collection.

SKINNY PANTS ARE OUT (SORT OF)

From the show’s opening look it was clear that the designer was taking his regularly skinny silhouette in a new direction. While the signature Saint Laurent drainpipes we all know and love were still present – this season completely covered in glitter – a slew of harem and palazzo pants finished the show, billowing in the wind as the models sashayed past.

AND… THE BLAZE PERFORMED THE AFTER-PARTY

Still on the beach (why leave?!) the guests were treated to a performance from the Parisian musical duo, dancing till the early hours of the morning on carpets that looked like they’d been flown in directly from Marrakech.
