Craig Green’s new campaign depicts man’s battle against beast

The London designer teamed up longtime collaborators Dan Tobin Smith and David Curtis-Ring on his SS19 images

Having set a number of brightly coloured windmills on fire in pretty dramatic fashion for his AW18 campaign, this time around, Craig Green presents a slightly more understated set of images for SS19.

Released today, the London-based designer’s new-season campaign elaborates on a number of prints seen as part of his SS19 collection, which he showed at Florence’s Pittii Uomo in June. Where they were originally distorted and blurred within the technicolour garments, these new images bring the motifs into focus, revealing effigy-like figures fighting battles with a number of beasts – as part of the latest chapter of Green’s ongoing exploration of masculinity and its many facets.

For SS19, the designer explained he had been thinking about the unsung heroes of the modern world: the doctors, surgeons, cleaners, and care workers who hold our lives in their hands every day. This idea was further amplified by the silhouette-like structures the models carried on their backs, which appeared as if guardian angels – given another topic on Green’s mind this season was the afterlife, the idea of heaven, and an alternative, unknown reality (although, coming from a slightly darker angle, he also mentioned they could be interpreted as the chalk lines of a crime scene).

To create the campaign, Green once again teamed up with longtime collaborators David Curtis-Ring, who created the figures using wood, straw, and paint, Dazed’s creative director Robbie Spencer, who styled the series, and photographer Dan Tobin Smith.
