A quick glance around at the uniquely fashionable crowd for this show was a good indication of what was to come. In his program notes, the designer cited a retro-sci-fi theme described as Bladerunner meets Flash Gordon. Dark, sexy, edgy and contemporary, Chenail delivered on all fronts. The cloned models, crowned with black cleopatra-esque bobs and painted angular brows strutted fiercely down the catwalk to German techno.Chenail's previous career as an architect was evident in his well-constructed designs. The base for the collection was anything but basic black. Interesting textures such as diamond seamed fabric were used for standout pieces like the sculpted funnel neck tunic "bag dress", and high-waisted forties-style skirts and trousers. A short blouson dress made of a snakeskin like fabric was draped over a model's body and oozed sex and sophistication. A series of beautiful voluminous wool coats were given a modern edge when paired with black leather and metallic leggings. Colours like plum and lemon were incorporated into the collection in the form of scarves, leggings, gloves and jerseys, which popped against the dark palate.
