The Hollywood actor, who enrolled on Central Saint Martins’ MA Fashion course last year and has recently launched his first collection in collaboration with Scandinavian high-street label Selected, will play Gianni Versace in a new film about the designer. The movie, which has been rumoured to be in the works, will be directed by Billie August (The House of Spirits (1993), Pelle the Conqueror (1987), Les Misérables (1998). Filming will reportedly start in December in Milan, followed by Reggio Calabria where the designer was born, and Miami where he was murdered by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997. The movie, however, is being made without the house of Versace’s authorisation. The company “has neither authorised nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace,” a representative told WWD. “The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” WWD also reported that Versace has inspired Banderas’ fashion design – apparently the late designer was the reason behind the gold embellishments on the biker jacket in his Selected collection. But this won’t be the first film about the world of Versace – in 2013, The House of Versace was released – a TV movie about Donatella’s attempt to carry on her brother’s legacy after his death. Like the film in which Banderas is set to star, the movie was not authorised by the company, and recieved truly awful reviews.
