Cunningham’s self-taught skill for capturing Manhattan’s street style is widely revered by the fashion community. Shooting everyday New Yorkers and often eschewing celebrity subjects, he is known for capturing authentic personal style. His work first appeared in The New York Times in 1978, and his relationship with the paper continues to this day; a collaboration which led to the production of Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary following his life, work and outlook on the worlds of fashion and culture. A statement from Eileen Murphy on behalf of the Times – who have been in contact with Cunningham – said: “we believe that his recovery will be quick.” We most certainly hopes this will be the case.
