Elon Musk has invented an electric car, a space rocket, PayPal (kind of) and the Hyperloop transportation system. But despite being one of the world’s most famous inventors, he was, ironically, deemed not futuristic enough to attend a futuristic Met Gala after-party at the Manhattan Standard’s Boom Boom Room in New York earlier this week.

“Everyone was shouting and trying to help, saying, ‘He’s Elon Musk!’ And they were just like, ‘We don’t care, he’s not on the list,’” a source told Page Six. Apparently he “waited outside in the rain at 1am but didn’t make it past the velvet rope.”

This year, the Met Gala’s theme was ‘Manus x Machina’, coinciding with the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition, which celebrates fashion in an age of technology.

The ball, which is also known as ‘the Fashion Oscars’, saw designers, models and celebrities modelling different interpretations of the theme: Zayn Malik stuck some Iron Man arms on to his tuxedo, Claire Danes donned a glow-in-the-dark gown by Zac Posen, and Kim and Kanye wore matching metallic looks custom-made by Balmain. No doubt, these stars had no problem gaining entry to the after-party – regardless of whether they had any genuine futuristic credentials or not.
