The singer, whose solo debut is slated for release this year, announced that she was working on a plus-size collection back in December, saying that it was her “lifelong dream to get to design real clothes for big people, clothes that are comfortable and cool!” Now these clothes are out. “I wanted to make pieces to last years,” says Ditto of the collection. “Beyond trends, beyond chain store. I wanted to create something all its own, something just for us, made with love and consideration. Made ethically in the USA as a small company with no big corporate input. Uncompromising, unapologetic, and timeless. Go-to pieces designed to last. A movement by us, for us.” Ditto stars in the lookbook herself, alongside two plus-size models – Barbie Ferreira, who is signed to Wilhelmina Curve, and Philomena Kwao, who recently wrote an article on diversity in the fashion industry for the Huffington Post. The collection comes in the wake of a ‘corset tee’ the singer created in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier last year. On sale from today, it features 11 pieces – from silver lamé club looks to vintage sourced denim jackets – available in UK sizes 18–32 (US sizes 14–28). Of course, this isn’t Ditto’s first foray into fashion – she opened Gaultier’s SS11 show in a laser-cut silver ribbon dress and closed it in rose-appliquéd corset with a performance of “River Deep, Mountain High” sung a cappella. More recently she modelled in Marc Jacobs’ SS16 show in a silk cady dress, following that up by starring in the designer’s SS16 campaign alongside Christina Ricci, Sky Ferreira and Bella Hadid. She was also photographed by Jeff Bark in custom-made pieces by Ryan Lo and Claire Barrow for the winter 2015 issue of Dazed. Beth Ditto’s clothing linePhotography Ezra PetronioEscape the algorithm!
