Bringing Dior couture to London’s docklands

Meet the Brit girl gang who got up close and personal with Raf Simons’ kinky collection for our State of the Nation issue

For our new State of the Nation issue, we plucked a gang of fresh new faces and cool girls from England’s streets to model Raf Simons’ seminal collection for Dior spring 2015 couture, which married the “romance of the 50s with the revolutionary vibes of the 60s and 70s,” paying homage to Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust guise through twisted printed jumpsuits and glittering glam rock sequins. From Lucan Gillespie, who made her catwalk just debut this season, to the polymathic magazine editor/soon to be fashion lecturer Reba Maybury, the girls chosen represent the collection’s own rebellious spirit. We got their word on the best cult British films, the State of the UK and what they’d do if they were Prime Minister for the day. Read it all below:

MAISIE GARDNER

16-year-old Essex-born model Masie Gardner is signed to Elite, and spent London Fashion Week hitting the runway for the likes of Ashley Williams and Marques’Almeida

What do you think of what Raf Simons has done at Dior?

I love the fact that Raf Simons is inspired by music and music culture, I think this makes the house more attractive and relevant to younger people. His designs are exciting and feminine and I absolutely loved the SS15 collection.

What’s your favourite cult British film?

Withnail and I.

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

My parents always let me wear what I wanted, and there are many interesting photos of me aged five, dancing about in purple sparkly tights and my favourite bright pink, glittery boots. I remember loving these boots, I wore them with everything and they were the envy of all my friends.

REBA MAYBURY

When not lecturing to fashion students at Central Saint Martins or busy running Sang Bleu and Radical People, Reba Maybury is planning to launch her own publishing house.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

Through admiring strong, progressive and compassionate women in cultural history and seeing what they were wearing and how they were presenting their individuality, sexuality and gender to the world through their bodies.

What do you think sums up or defines British youth today?

A confidence in digital narcissism with no aim or plan.

What moment in British fashion history would you have liked to witness?

To have seen what Cosey Fanni Tutti was wearing in Hackney in the early 1970s.

TALLULAH HADDON

Self-proclaimed performance artist, beatboxer, actress and aspiring cannibal, Tallulah Rose Haddon is Camberwell born and bred.

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

Wearing nothing but clip on earrings and chicken pox.

If the collection’s latex boots were in your wardrobe, where would you go wearing them?

Alternative Miss World, on stage, Asda car parks, kicking out on a carrousel horse, running down an escalator the wrong way, Coney Island Freak Show, The RVT, dancing to Shame and Skinny Girl Diet.

What fictional character would look best in this collection?

The Child Catcher would look pretty sassy in those high leg boots.

DAISY DAVIDSON

22-year-old Londoner Daisy interns at Ashley Williams and recently modelled for Selfridges’ radical Agender campaign.

What moment in British fashion history would you have liked to witness?

I would loved to have seen London in the 60s, but also I wouldn't mind going back to 2007 New Rave/club kids/Super Super times because I just missed out and it always had a fun, trashy but creative feel about it.

If the collection’s latex boots were in your wardrobe, where would you go wearing them?

I think I’d wear the latex boots (with some talc, LOL) with a cosplay dress. I have a really good Lolita one I got in Japan years ago, so cute!

Describe London in three words.

London in three words: too bloomin’ expensive!

HARRIET VERNEY

Writer and stylist Harriet Verney was born with fashion in her blood thanks to aunt Isabella Blow. Verney defines her generation as "a bit pissed off."

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

My Mum picking me up from school in a khaki USA army boiler suit with a packet of B&H Gold hanging out the front pocket.

What fictional character would look best in this collection?

Maybe like Kathy Burke in Scrubbers, the kinky rubber boots are kind of like posh marigolds for the feet. Perhaps she wouldn’t look the best, but it would be A LOOK.

What moment in British fashion history would you have liked to witness?

My aunt told me she made Dan Macmillan wave his willy in a pair of bumsters at Anna Wintour at an early McQueen show. That would have been funny.

CHARLIE BARKER

Nottingham-born model and blogger Charlie Barker (Select) spends her days snapping pictures to send to the 522k following on her “majestic” Instagram.

What do you think about Raf Simons bringing some kink to couture?

It's perfect! Every couture needs kink.

What do you think sums up or defines British youth today?

Selfies and sushi.

What’s your favourite cult British film?

This is England, obviously!

GEORGIA CHAMBERS

When not working on her blog, 16-year-old Georgia (Storm) collects fashion books and magazines to escape the boredom of going to school in the middle of nowhere.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

My interest in fashion has probably come from my mum as she loves clothes and fashion magazines, so they have always been scattered around the house. My first fashion related memory, if you can call it fashion, was when I was about three or four. I would only wear a snow white outfit with ladybird welly boots and completely refused to go out of the house in anything else. I’ve always been quite headstrong!

If the collection’s latex boots were in your wardrobe, where would you go wearing them?

If I had a pair of Dior latex boots I would definitely take them in my case skiing and wear them while dancing on the table at the Folie Douce in Meribel!

What would you do if you were Prime Minister for the day?

If I was Prime Minister for the day I would make sure it was the best day ever and cut everybody's taxes and throw a huge party at Downing Street and everybody would be invited!

LUCAN GILLESPIE

16-year-old Lucan Gillespie made her runway debut this season for Louis Vuitton, and has also modelled for Valentino and J.W. Anderson

What sparked your interest in fashion?

I think I came out of the womb with an interest in fashion!

Describe the state of the UK in three words.

Too Many Exams.

What would you do if you were Prime Minister for the day?

I'd visit the Queen for tea with my crew and throw a party at Number 10 afterwards.

CORA CORRE

Cora Corre (Next) was introduced to the world of fashion early thanks to superstar grandma Vivienne Westwood, and is now making a name for herself as a breakout model.

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

I remember looking into both my mum and dad’s wardrobe. Also I was lucky to grow up with my mum’s studio in our home, I was always surrounded by such creativity.

What fictional character would look best in this collection?

Maybe Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.

What do you think defines British youth today?

The freedom to wear what you want and be who you want to be.

ARIEL FINCH

Illustration student Ariel Finch has worked with the likes of Meadham Kirchhoff and is also a researcher in sexuality and masculinity.

What’s your first fashion-related memory?

Dressing up in a fur coat as lady Di and later taking a picture of 1965 Paul McCartney to show to the hairdressers.

If the collection’s latex boots were in your wardrobe, where would you go wearing them?

Everywhere!

What’s your favourite cult British film?

Black Narcissus, a Powell and Pressburger film from 1947. Nuns set up a school in the Himalayas and slowly go stir crazy from their seductive surroundings!
