The pieces have a clear Parisian influence in their simplicity (thanks to the fact the sisters spend half their time there), but are full of unexpected details – glittering embellishments decorate a thigh, a jacket comes complete with perforated panels. The “two very different styles and contrasted traditions” of both Paris and Istanbul provided “an endless source of inspiration” for the collection – the Turkish capital’s “huge and very rich historical and architectural heritage” playing a key role, with Ottoman-era influences evident in the lines and embellishments of a hand-embroidered silk dress. This latest collection follows on from their last Paris couture show, where the award-winning designers presented a sculptural procession of flower inspired dresses, colours flashing on a dark catwalk like blooms under moonlight – one piece even covered in tiny embellishments that suggested drops of morning dew. Don’t think that these are clothes designed with a typical femininity in mind, though – the fictional female the sisters see in their collection is teenage assassin Azumi, star of an eponymous series of Japanese manga. “Our heroines are like Azumi, women who are energetic and playful,” the designers conclude.
