Initial reaction:
2015: A Space Odyssey. White lanterns hung over the space like giant planets, illuminating Saunders’ quietly graphic menswear, which was shown alongside his women’s resort, on a strong cast including Abiah Hostvedt and girl of the moment Natalie Westling.
Earth and beyond:
Saunders quoted eighties Italian interiors and the work of Ettore Sottsass as points of departure for his stripes and graphic lines, but the collection also had a subtle air of space age about it, seen in metallic Chelsea boots, dark charcoal prints resembling a star-filled outer space and gold-flecked trousers that looked like crackled meteor rain. But Earth was there as well, in muted beige and warm sunset yellow. The show was styled by Dazed fashion director Robbie Spencer.
The details:
“Basically I’ve been looking at a refinement of what I have been doing – developing textiles is a really important aspect of it. I wanted to focus on, ‘how can I refine my brand? How can it develop? – and yet still maintain its identity?' So a lot of the details in the collection are what I spent the time on: the knitwear construction, the bonded fabrics, the prints and colours.” – Jonathan Saunders.
Last season Saunders opted for 80s sportswear, inspired by "hot pikeys" – yes, really. See it below:
