Grey Londonesque skies and chilly rain actually made the perfect setting for the Belstaff show in New York yesterday morning. The house's classic waxed cotton jackets are cool for their motorcycle heritage associations and clean design, but against the backdrop of storm clouds and editors shaking out their umbrellas, they became exciting. Sometimes, the best part of the fall shows is that they offer relevant inspiration in the moment. You can take ideas from the runway and play with them in the slushy puddles outside. From Belstaff, take note of the short, flouncy bonded gabardine skirts worn with oversize coats. If you don't have outerwear that measures up to the cognac trench or python and calf leather jackets, you're not alone – and we'll have to wait for AW13. At least we have our umbrellas now.
