Things will soon change with the opening of Maison Moschino, a boutique Milan hotel located in a neoclassical railway station that was originally built to serve the Milan-Monza line in the 1840s. Over four floors, 54 unique rooms and 15 suites contrast with their more traditional outer shell, each designed by creative director Rossella Jardini and the rest of Moschino’s creative team. Surrealist and ironic Moschino signatures are incorporated into a fairytale theme for the rooms, based on the idea that to sleep is to dream, and dreams are fairytales that we experience first hand. In characteristic Moschino style, there is a reinterpretation of the classic hotel paradigm. A stylish hall on the ground floor – named “The Dream” – resembles a minimalist’s ideal, with tiny scattered lights embedded in a cream-coloured ceiling that matches the walls, floors and furniture. After coming across the shiny surfaces and orderly right angles, you begin to notice the dreamlike twists: a sheep sculpture stands next to a wooly-looking armchair beneath a blanket of thick clouds made of 3D discs. From the digital artist’s interpretations of the rooms, you can already see nods to the red heart shape that has become Moschino’s logo. In the corner of the “Petals” room, it may be up to the guest to decide whether he or she is sitting on a heart-shaped flower, a flower-shaped heart, or crudely swollen female genitals. And the red petal bedspread and oversized white padded headboard can only have been designed for purposes of seduction. The hotel is set to open in 2009, so best to get reservations in early.
