The daring designer creates a bright and colourful new collaborative collection for the iconic luggage brand this A/W11
Adventurous Parisian designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has always aimed to blend the worlds of fashion, pop culture, art and music, and for A/W'11 the collaboration continues with his new line for the iconic luggage brand Kipling. The colourful graphic collection of bags is split into four lines - Game Ever, Psycho-Daisy, NylonClub and Candy-Say - all screaming with that classic JCDC look of spontaneity and fun.
The looks span a variety of themes including primary blocks of colour, neo-skeleton prints inspired by the Japanese symbol of Three Wise Monkeys, elements of English hunting gear and finally with Candy-Say, a collection of small leather bags adorned in rainbows, bows and of course the iconic Kipling Monkey.
Dazed Digital: How do you find your design inspiration when you do cross over co-op, especially this bag co-op with Kipling?
JCDC: I usually find my inspiration in pop culture, art and music. But everything around me inspired me. Regarding Kipling, I translated into a graphic, colourful and affordable collection of bags for the fast-moving fashion generation.
DD: Many celebrities are fond of your fashion pieces, are you also their close friend? And do they love your cross over collection – Kipling by JC de Castelbajac?
JCDC: Of course they are my close friends because I only can dress celebrities I’m close, people I like their universe and also which the universe is close to mine. That’s why I get along very well with Kanye (West), Katy (Perry), Beth Ditto, Yelle, Lady Gaga, Paloma Faith, and all the young kids of the Hip Hop culture. Recently, I met Will I Am from Black Eye Peas in which the universe is very close to mine, and we have already full of project together for the future.
DD: What time were you engaged in the busiest schedule in a year? Fashion week?
JCDC: All along the year! But you’re right, the fashion week is for me an important moment because I have to show my new collection, but I still have so many projects all over the year. In September, I will participate in an event blog with Kipling, for the launch of our collaboration, and I have been invited by “Le Festival du Cinéma Américain” in Deauville, to talk about US films, and a artistic approach of the movies. I also designed a tarp who will be in place on the front of “La conciergerie” (huge monument in Paris) beginning of September; I worked on musical project which I would have done the staging (shown at the beginning of the fashion week); and I organized a big event in collaboration with Coca Cola for their 125th anniversary… and all these project are only for September… Let’s imagine for the rest of the year!
The collection is available exclusively in Selfridges from the 18th of August and then in selected Kipling stores and on kipling.com from the 1st of September.
