Boy/Band of Outsiders S/S 09 Video Lookbooks

Kirsten Dunst and Max Minghella model Scott Sternberg's collection in a video installation and he has given Dazed Digital access to the films.

Scott Sternberg certainly has an eclectic taste when choosing his collaborations. Last month he played dress-up with Michelle Williams in interior designer Paul Fortune’s house. For his SS09 presentation in New York last Saturday it was up to Kirsten Dunst to bring to life Boy’s tomboy, downtown chic. And she did, literally, in the video installation projected onto Milk Studios’ white walls, alongside British actor Max Minghella and rapper Charles Hamilton, both in Band of Outsiders. Both lines intermingled, hung in same-colour arrangements, on rails for all present to browse through, as if to reinforce the feeling that a girl could grab one of the men’s blazer to team with the white shirtdress hanging right next to it.

Kirsten brought her own, edgy yet playful sense to Scott’s low-key basics, making them perfect for those easy, relaxed weekends spent lounging in the Village, sipping restorative cappuccinos after a heavy-duty week in the city. Think chambray double-breasted blazers over cute shorts, a white linen tuxedo, tight ribbon-strapped skirts, in red and blue and black and white, with neat little shirts tucked-in, cotton piqué dresses teamed with a collarless trench and a shirtdress with off-centre buttons. There were also a couple of one-shoulder cocktail dresses that offered some dress-up options, and plenty of yellow touches that make this, so far, the surprise colour of the summer.

The menswear line followed the same path and perhaps dictated it in the first place. There was a selection of the short-sleeved preppy shirts that are now such a staple of any Band collection, this time in bright colours and teamed with shorts and Velcro boat shoes. Slim cardigans, baseball jackets and a white linen suit evoked the Fifties but did not feel stale due to Scott’s off-beat SoCal approach to the classics.

Brett Brooks, the Head Buyer at Ron Herman in LA and officially the first person in the world to buy Band of Outsiders in a small collection of ties in vintage fabrics, was originally attracted to this very “hands-on” manner and the “shrunken shapes that my clients had been used to seeing in our shop. It was schoolboy but elevated.” The ties led to shirts, and eventually suits and Brett has already snapped the Spring collection up. He sees “a continuation in shape with new, exciting fabrics. A touch of New Wave, bright colours, upbeat and a lot of fun.” Precisely what one needs for those lazy Californian summer days.
