Since 1970, June has become a time dedicated to remembering the Stonewall Riots and celebrating queer lives, identities and liberation. It’s also a time when brands and companies have come out in support of the LGBTQ+ community, offering partnerships, donations and products in solidarity. Over the years, much has been said about pinkwashing and rainbow capitalism, and much of it is fair criticism. However, one industry that should always be fully supportive of Pride is beauty. It’s an industry that cannot be separated from queer people; you’d be hard-pressed to find a trend that can’t be traced back to the community (particularly the QPOC and drag community) or hasn’t been influenced by queer hairstylists and make-up artists like the pioneering Kevyn Aucoin. The number of Pride campaigns has dwindled over the last few years, as conservatism in politics and culture has risen, and governments are attacking LGBTQ+ rights. Of course, corporate support and rainbow capitalism will not ultimately lead to queer liberation, but visibility still matters, and companies giving into a small but vocal minority by abandoning the LGBTQ+ community will only further empower and embolden these homophobic and transphobic supporters. So, below is a round-up of the beauty brands that are supporting Pride this year. And read here for an interview with Zolita for her campaign with NYX Cosmetics. 1/14 You may like next 1/14 1/14 AesopAesopEvery Pride, Aesop clears out the products in select stores around the world and replaces them with books by LGBTQ+ authors for its annual Queer Library.
