Jessie Edelstein’s clowncore beauty will give you nightmares

If you saw her IRL, you’d think the Instagram algorithm had birthed a sentient killer clown with a Depop account

The minimalist clean-girl aesthetic may have been dragging out its moment for the past few years but the esoteric internet girlies aren’t having any of it. One icon offering salvation from the hordes of bare skin and nude lips haunting our Instagram feeds is the theatrically thotty, visual artist and musician Jessie Edelstein, known to her followers as Jessie.mp3.

Delighting in everything tacky, trashy and nostalgic – she describes her aesthetic as subversive “ugly glamour” – Edelstein’s larger-than-life looks are reminiscent of the stage. Using dramatic shapes and colour combinations that wouldn’t look out of place on 80s club kids, the make-up leans aesthetically into early 2000s era of MTV Awards celebrity red carpet moments mixed with Tumblr-era cursed images mixed with TikTok’s clowncore trend. If you saw her IRL, you’d think the Instagram algorithm had birthed a sentient killer clown with a Depop account.

Though the looks themselves change every time, morphing from wild multi-eyed checkerboard make-up to hypnotic optical illusion swirls to smiley faces complete with googly eyes, you’ll know it’s Jessie through her overdrawn eyes and lips and her signature little red clown nose. Unlike the pristine looks floating through your For You Page, her style prioritises fun and fierceness over making sure the product stays between the lines.

Originally from the “conservative and conformist” suburbia of Long Island NY, the 25-year-old now lives in LA where she writes and performs her own music and visual material. Her latest EP sums up her vibe entirely. Accurately titled Human Clickbait, you’ll hear babies crying on a track about nepotism (“Nepo Baby”) right after a track dedicated to Redbull that feels just as intense as energy drink caffeine withdrawals.

Here’s a bit more identity verification information directly from the superstar herself.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you grew up?

Jessie Edelstein: I’m a visual artist with my primary mediums being face paint and performance. I grew up in suburbia on Long Island where the culture was extremely conservative and conformist. Creativity and individuality of any kind were discouraged. I spent many years forcing myself to conform and it wasn’t until I was a senior in high school that I started embracing and exploring my creative abilities.

What is it you do and why do you do it?

Jessie Edelstein: I do face production which is a term I coined to describe my face painting. Essentially I see the face the same as a blank canvas or sculptural object. I erase all the existing features and reconstruct it in a way that is visually satisfying to me. I find painting on traditional canvas extremely unsatisfying, painting on a face feels much more immediate and impactful. Additionally, it’s just how I express myself, my look allows me to show the outside world how I always feel on the inside.

How did you get into it?

Jessie Edelstein: When I finally allowed myself to be creative, I began to sketch the same face over and over in my notebooks. I combined the core features of this face (gap tooth, thin eyebrows, overdrawn lips) with my classical drawing and painting training to create the base look I have today. Around the same time I was also first exposed to drag via RuPaul’s Drag Race which was a massive inspiration as well.

What’s your earliest beauty-related memory?

Jessie Edelstein: I used to love the Disney princesses when I was really young because I thought they were really beautiful and glamorous. My favourite was Cinderella. I’ve always had a thing for blondes.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Jessie Edelstein: Working on my original music and creative directing my own music videos.

Which fictional character do you most relate to?

Jessie Edelstein: Cher Horowitz from Clueless. In the movie, she’s initially perceived as a “dumb blonde” because she presents very feminine and likes fashion when in reality she’s very intelligent and capable. Even though I’m a natural brunette (and only blonde by choice) I relate heavily to the idea of subverting this stereotype.

Who is your beauty icon?

Jessie Edelstein: Lady Gaga but specifically her from like 2008-2013. She pulled so many amazing looks back then it’s hard to pick a favourite. She was a massive inspiration to me growing up because she made me feel like it was ok to be different.

What does beauty mean to you?

Jessie Edelstein: Authenticity

When do you feel most beautiful?

Jessie Edelstein: Whenever I’m presenting in a way that feels authentic to me at that moment.

What is the future of beauty?

Jessie Edelstein: Customisation of form.

If you could have a new sense on top of your existing ones, what would it be?

Jessie Edelstein: Being able to talk to plants and animals.

You encounter a hostile alien race and sound is their only mechanism for communication. What song would you play to them to inspire them to spare you and the rest of the human race?
