The Australian rapper attracted widespread criticism on social media following the release of her music video for “I Am the Stripclub” on Thursday (1 July). In one scene, Azalea is seen wearing a black wig and face make-up that appears to be noticeably darker than her usual fair complexion. The video led to many people on social media accusing the 33-year-old of Blackfishing – a term used to describe when white women co-opt and impersonate aspects of Black women to appear racially ambiguous in order to capitalise on the identity for monetary or social gain. This can be done through everything from make-up, clothing, and hairstyles to more extreme surgery or fillers. One fan wrote directly to the rapper. “People are saying that you are Blackfishing and making up this fake narrative, can you clear them up please because people are taking it too far and running with that lie,” they wrote. Azalea responded, saying: “I don’t care… fuck those ppl babe lol.” “I’m the same colour as I always am, just in a dimly lit room with red lights,” she wrote. “It’s the same make-up from a smokey eye and different wig. Just ignore them, who cares? Let em talk.” “I don’t care about something that ridiculous and baseless. I’m wearing a shade six in Armani foundation, it’s the same shade I’ve worn for the last three years,” she added. “It’s the same shade in every music video since ‘Sally Walker’. Suddenly I wear a black wig in a club scene and it’s an issue.” I’m the same color as I always am, just in a dimly lit room with red lights. It’s the same makeup from every other part of the video just with a Smokey eye and different wig. Just ignore them, who cares? Let em talk.— IGGY AZALEA (@IGGYAZALEA) July 2, 2021 Azalea’s make-up artist also defended the artist, writing on Twitter: “She literally wore the same face makeup during every scene of the video… I would know, I did it. It’s a shade six from Armani luminous silk (a light/medium olive undertone shade if you’re curious.)” Despite the controversy, “I Am The Stripclub” currently has over 2.5 million views. Azalea thanked everyone – even those calling her out – for their support. “To everyone showing me love: Thank you for dedicating your day to me and helping me promote, I love you! To everyone showing me hate: Thank you for dedicating your day to me and helping me promote, I love you!" she tweeted.
