For young people looking to start their careers, this uncertainty coupled with the stark lack of jobs is worrying to say the least. If you’re Black or from another minority ethnic background, this becomes exasperated even more. Looking to offer a solution to this, Mentoring Matters launched earlier this year with the sole aim of helping bring some much-needed equality to the fashion industry. Enlisting a roster of some of the industry’s biggest names across different sectors – including photographer Nadine Ijewere, set designer Ibby Njoya, and Dazed’s own editor-in-chief Isabella Burley – the scheme will set BAME candidates up with 1-2-1 sessions with these experts to offer advice, support, and feedback on their work. For those interested in beauty, the latest round of mentors include make-up artist Ammy Drammeh, hairstylist Cyndia Harvey, and nail artist Ama Quashie who will work with successful candidates closely in 12 1-2-1 sessions over six months. If you think that you’d benefit from this invaluable opportunity, you’ve got just under two weeks to submit your application before it closes on September 30. Simply send an email to info@mentoringmatters.co.uk with some information about what you do, why you think you’d be right for the scheme and any exmaples of work in the field you’re interested in (if you have any). Please note, that these spots are only for Black and other ethnic minority people from the ages of 18-27. The scheme is also looking for industry experts to join as its next round of mentors, so if you think you fit the bill, get in touch! Escape the algorithm!
