Jeffree Star’s controversial ‘Orgy’ palette accused of being faulty

Is it possible for Jeffree Star to drop new products – or really do anything – without causing controversy? Answer: No. So, you’ll be unsurprised to hear that the controversial YouTuber is embroiled in yet another drama following the release of a new palette. 

The drop caused controversy right from the moment it was announced and it’s only gone downhill since then. After revealing the name of the palette as ‘Orgy’ – inspired by the “orgy of nudes”, he says – fans immediately criticised it for its overtly sexual nature. “The fact that Jeffree Star is releasing an ‘Orgy’ collection knowing damn well like 50 per cent of his fan base consists of minors after the Shane series is....gross???,” said one.

While others compared the palette to NARS’ offerings, which are well known for their sexual names, his critics reminded them that Star’s fanbase is mostly younger and therefore not at an age to be exposed to the concept of an orgy. The sexual nature of the palette also extends to the name of its shades too, including ‘Glory Hole’, ‘Cunnilingus’, and ‘Voyeurism’.

The palette was further criticised once buyers started receiving it, noting the quality was sub-par and that the eyeshadows were crumbly and broken when opened. Others claimed there were “little pellets” in some of the shades too. Star quickly took to his Instagram stories to explain that the issue was only with some of the mini palettes – despite others showing their regular sized ones with the same issue. “When you upscale a project and make 100,000, 200,000, 300,000 units, there sometimes can be issues,” he said. “Sadly the lab can fuck up. We did have a small batch issue with one of them.”

Despite claiming to have an “amazing customer service team”, @coraly_bb was told that the texture of the product was because of them being toppers (even though they were unusable) before she was eventually offered a refund. 

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the quality of Star’s products have been criticised. Last year, he refunded customers after they received “sweaty” lipsticks in a mystery box, and then again for contaminated Conspiracy palettes that included hairs. His previous release this year – the Cremated collection – was also heavily criticised for being insensitive during a global pandemic, though unsurprisingly, he refused to apologise for any offence caused.
