And celebs are not immune either as we found out when Amandla Stenberg revealed that they recently shaved their eyebrows because of the social media platform. In a Get Ready with Me tutorial for Vogue, Stenberg talks us through their skincare routine, how they box braid their hair – a skill they learnt in quarantine – and their quick and easy make-up look. While doing their brows, Stenberg shared that they recently shaved off the ends of their eyebrows because of TikTok. “I just did that thing that everyone’s doing now where I shaved off the ends of my eyebrows because of goddamn TikTok,” they said. “So I have a different eyebrow shape than usual but honestly loving it, absolutely loving it.” Aside from brows, Stenberg keeps their routine pretty simple. Starting off by submerging their face in an ice bath, Stenberg uses a CeraVe cleanser with an exfoliating pad followed by a Biore pore strip. They then finish it off with a CeraVe moisturiser. When it comes to the hair, however, the process is slightly more extensive. Explaining that they’ve been doing a bigger box braid while in isolation, Stenberg says they’ve been trying to figure out a braid look that feels gender neutral but still femme. Using blonde extensions with blue ombre ends, Stenberg first parts their hair into immaculate triangular sections, a process that takes a couple of hours. They moisturise their hair with Devacurl and then use an edge control by Cantu before taking a section of the extensions and looping it around their hair and braiding it in. Eight hours later the braids are complete. Stenberg then moves on make-up including Milk foundation, concealer, contour and highlighter. As well as a very subtle E-girl inspired red nose. “As I’ve gotten older my relationship with make-up has shifted, depending on how I’m feeling in my body, how often I’m having to wear it for work – so many things affect it,” they say. “I feel like I have a relationship with it now that feels way less about covering up flaws or insecurities around myself and more about having fun.” Escape the algorithm!
