Snoh Aalegra: My life in beauty products

Ahead of her upcoming album released this week, R&B singer Snoh Aalegra tells us about the beauty products that mean the most to her

Beauty Biographies is a column where we ask some of our favourite people to reflect on the beauty items that have influenced their lives and have a sentimental place in their heart. From their grandmother’s perfume to the eyeshadow they wore to their first dance these are the products that have had a significant impact on them and that instantly transport them back to a particular time, place, or person.

Snoh Aalegra is ice cool. After coming to attention when Drake sampled her velvety vocals on his 2017 More Life track “Do Not Disturb,” Aalegra followed up with her debut album FEELS, a divine blend of contemporary hip hop and old-school soul which explored her Swedish and Persian heritage alongside themes of love, anguish and self-discovery. Taking inspiration from the likes of Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and Prince – who she befriended before the legend’s untimely death in 2016 – Aalegra, now based in LA, draws you in with her smoky, bluesy voice and sumptuous production.

Having collaborated with hip hop heavyweights like Vince Staples, Common, Killer Mike and No I.D., Aalegra is now releasing her second record. -Ugh, those feels again sees Aalegra back with her rich and soulful sounds as she traverses the troubled waters of alienation, anxiety, and toxic relationships while learning to embrace self-love, growth and independence. At times heartbreaking, but never hopeless, these are dreamy songs you can lose yourself in.

Below, Aalegra talks us through the beauty products that remind her of her childhood, her old life in London, and also reveals a current obsession that she can’t live without.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

After an entire childhood of constantly begging my mom for permission to wear make up in public, she finally approved and gave me this cute mascara amongst a few other little staple pieces. I was 12 years old and life was made. Thinking back, that was kind of young. I can imagine my mom had enough of the cry baby nagging so she just gave up.

Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Eau de Toilette

This classic by Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance reminds me of my mom and my childhood. I remember my admiration for the bottle design. I never wore it personally because the scent is kind of intense, but the smell was always around. Every time I catch the scent on someone it takes me back in time like a time machine right into my mother's arms.

MAC Cosmetics Kinda Sexy

This lipstick by MAC called ‘Kinda Sexy’ has been a favorite for years now and is one of my essential beauty products. I make a mix of about 3-4 lip shades to get the perfect colour, but this lipstick is one of the secrets to my formula and has been present in many many memorable moments of my life and will continue to be a major key.

YSL Parisienne Eau de Parfum

This fragrance ‘Parisienne’ by YSL was my fave back when I lived in London. It was such a special time in my life. So insane how I feel like I'm right back in the gloom and the pulse of the city whenever I smell this.

LA MER Renewal Oil

Finally, a product that I currently can’t be without! This is this face oil by La Mer. My make up artist introduced me to this product about a year ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I use this right after I wash my face in the morning before applying my day cream and make-up. This oil gives the face the most beautiful glow!
