Pacollection is the first Paco Rabanne scent collection from Julien Dossena

We speak to the creative director to find out more about the innovative new fragrances

Paco Rabanne has launched its first ever fragrance collection: Pacollection – a six-piece range that looks to cater to all aspects of your personality. With past scent 1 Million, launched in 2008, becoming the best-selling fragrance of all time the bar was set high. But under the watchful eye of Creative Director Julien Dossena, this new collection has not disappointed.

Like miniature Jeff Koons for your bathroom, the metallic bottles are deceptively featherweight, squishable and unbreakable (a synchronic nod to the brand’s iconic chainmail tops and use of industrial materials). What’s inside is even more surprising: wasabi, mimosa and a whole host of other bizarre ingredients.

Each of the scents calls out different character types: Fabulous Me, Genius Me, Dangerous Me, Erotic Me, Strong Me and Crazy Me. “I had a lot of freedom with this project,” Dossena tells Dazed Beauty. “I tried to let go and be genuine, and what we’ve developed is actually quite disruptive. Some of the ingredients are things you’d find in a drink, like wasabi and mimosa. This bottle is made to be thrown into a suitcase or on a bed. I was trying to achieve a balance between developing something with a softness and also between creating a beautiful design to be displayed in your bathroom. Something in between pop and minimal, austerity and opulence, sensuality and architecture, avant-garde and joy. That’s the Paco mindset.”

Fronting the campaign is a host of diverse young creatives from across the globe, many of whom the house has been quietly dressing for a few seasons now: dancer and model Alton Mason, skater Evan Mock, DJ Bambounou, Korean model Hyunji Shin, singer Kelela and actress Dree Hemingway. “In traditional fragrance advertising, marketing, communication, it’s usually a huge celebrity fronting the campaign and we’re expected to perform some kind of idol-worship,” says Bastien Daguzan, CEO of Paco Rabanne Fashion. “That’s not to say some of these people we’ve worked with on Pacollection aren't famous or notable but they’re real people, they’re not just muses, they’re radicals, creatives and artists.”

Dossena has a very personal relationship with all the members of the cast and recalls the shoot day as filled with laughter. “We wanted to find the people I love who I always work with. I go and watch DJ Bambounou play in Paris all the time. Evan Mock. I loved his hair colour– I found him on Instagram and he’s such an elegant skater.”

Of course, Dree Hemingway, previously the face of Lady Million is part of the new collective. “We wanted a wink to the first Million scent when she had long flowing blonde hair, and now, of course, she’s shaved it all off...so she translates to this new Pacollection universe. Hyunjo– well she came for a fitting for a show and I didn’t take her at first, but I remember feeling like “maybe that girl has swallowed the sun, she’s so bright.” She has such a strong character. Kelela is a collaborator, we met because she loves wearing Paco Rabanne. We became a bigger group of friends, I love her songwriting. Alton is an artist and a dancer, and a model, he’s super positive and he has a fluid feeling to him.”

What does Dossena imagine brings this group together? “They all have a freedom about them,” he smiles “these freaks of the neighbourhood who are stronger than anyone else.”

Pacollection is available now to buy on Selfridges.com, going for £65.00 a bottle.
