Chances are you’ve never seen something quite like Fecal Matter. Boasting an immense following of 376k, the artistic Canadian duo (consisting of Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran) have taken both the fashion and beauty worlds by storm with their utterly extraordinary alien lewks.
“We don't let our gender dictate how we live,” says the pair. This much is certainly true - large breasts and pregnant stomachs appear and simultaneously disappear while their bodies often morph into things far, far beyond the human realm.
Fecal Matter’s main project is selling their unique garments on Depop - clunky metallic chokers, shredded jeans, thick bejewelled stripper heels, you name it - and they also dabble in industrial techno music from time to time.
Their best invention? A pair of impossible, unimaginable, yet walkable skin-feet heels. This bizarre brainchild of the two has landed them on CTV News discussing the inception of the irregular shoe - “the intention behind it is to question what it is to be human.” We haven’t seen fashion this radical since McQueen’s 2010 Plato’s Atlantis show.
With their most recent S/S 19 collection shown in London, Fecal Matter show no sign whatsoever of ever conforming to society, and we love them for it. Below, we talk to the pair about the future of beauty.
It's 30 years from now. You stumble home at 3 am and catch your reflection in the fridge door. What do you look like?
Not human. In 30 years, we probably won't have fridges since everyone will eat supplement pills instead of food to reduce production waste and put less pressure on environmental crops. So, maybe we would catch our reflection in a river running through our home instead, and we’d look just like ourselves today, but better.
As a warning to the other members of the resistance your head is to be mounted above the gates of the city. How would you do your makeup that morning?
We’d do one last intense, beautiful, otherworldly Fecal Matter make-up look. Perhaps we’d carve ‘provoke humanity’ on our foreheads or use symbols of freedom and peace.
It's the year 2080 and the two sexes have become obsolete in favour of one single type of human. Describe your perfect evening in.
Our evening wouldn’t be any different to what it is now since we already live our lives as if the two sexes our obsolete. We don't let our gender dictate how we live, so, yeah, we’d still have fun creating and experimenting all night long until sunrise.
You have to replace your body with that of an animal or a mythological creature. What do you go for and why?
Hannah: A Sphynx hairless cat. I’m really in love with felines but the sphynx breed most resembles the way I look - it’s like the cat for aliens. Having said that, my human body is already morphing like a unique creature, so perhaps I wouldn’t need to replace it.
Steven: I’d be a mythological creature that doesn't exist yet, or a mutation of a combination of creatures. My creature would be able to fly and swim and would look futuristic and alien-like. Our work aims to create the new and push the boundaries of imagination.
