Arts+CultureNewsWhat the hell does Trump’s ‘covfefe’ tweet mean? It’s launched a million memes anywayShareLink copied ✔️May 31, 2017Arts+CultureNewsTextAnna Cafolla Is he dead? Butt-tweeting? Sending Putin a secret message? “Despite the constant negative press covfefe”, Donald Trump posted to Twitter at midnight last night. The cryptic tweet stayed live for hours, and was only just removed by the U.S president (or some weary, bored-of-all-this-bullshit aides). In that void of time when we weren’t sure if covfefe signalled the dawn of a new era or a seven-letter creation in the running for the Oxford Dictionary’s word of 2017, a million memes were launched. Twitter suggests that it’s a Samoan word, but isn’t able to directly translate it. Urban Dictionary – a source for many of us – defined it as “When you want to say ‘coverage’ but your hands are too small to hit all the letters on your keyboard”. Arguments continue to rage over the correction pronunciation. Boring narcs are saying it’s a misspelling of ‘coverage’. The White House hasn’t provided an official statement just yet (“The tweet speaks for itself” Sean Spicer will garble), but Trump has since tweeted: “Who can figure out the true meaning of covfefe ???,” he asked. “Enjoy!” And suddenly, the joy surrounding this gaffe completely dissipated.
