Halloween stores across the US have apparently declared Caitlyn Jenner as their number one bestselling “costume” this year. 

The mystifyingly offensive news was reported by TMZ – who stated that the transphobic get-up had beaten last year's most popular choice, Frozen, and had been “flying off the shelves” since its release in August. 

“Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year,” Halloween store Spirit Halloween spokesperson Trisha Lombardo told Daily News when the costume was first announced. “Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.”

The outfit recreates the former Olympian's iconic Vanity Fair cover, with a white corset, wig and a sash that reads “Call Me Cait.” And, when you consider that the whole point of Halloween is to frighten people with “scary” characters, it doesn't take a genius to see why the reaction to the costume was so immediate. It's very obviously a pretty tasteless choice.

“If a man wears the costume with the intention of mocking Caitlyn Jenner, and by extension all transgender women, that is just mean-spirited and unacceptable,” explained Nick Adams, the director of GLAAD's transgender media. “Transgender women are women, and when Caitlyn Jenner or any other trans woman steps out into the world as her authentic self, she isn't wearing a costume.”

This news coincides with recent reports that another trans “Ladyboy” costume – complete with dress and fake penis – was removed from Amazon after reviewers deemed it “repulsive”.
