Meet the IRL Walt and Jesse. The Guardian reports that 31-year-old Christopher Adam Matous and 56-year-old Kent Jerome Duby (similar age gap, no?) were arrested outside a Taco Bell in Iowa on suspicion of manufacturing methamphetamine, with one of the men identified as a Taco Bell employee and remnants of a laboratory found by police inside the restaurant. A fast food chain called Los Pollos Hermanos is the epicentre of lots of meth-related activity in Breaking Bad, although no cooking took place there, the fried chicken joint just acted as a front and a useful meeting place for deals. It’s unclear whether Taco Bell was doubling up as a meth lab in this real-life situation – I’d hazard a guess that juggling burger flipping and meth cooking must be seriously tough. Plus, let’s assume that the Taco Bell’s employee’s bosses were kept unaware of the whole "cooking meth at work" thing, maintaining that secret must have been hard work. I’m fairly sure that I could definitely not get away with a meth lab under my desk. Walt and Jesse’s operation did at least take place in the middle of nowhere, at first anyway. Matous and Duby obviously weren’t diligent enough when it came to keeping the operation undercover – police were responding to a suspicious persons report at the Cedar Rapids restaurant. Meth labs have an extremely distinctive odour, maybe they were cooking it up at the Taco Bell and the surrounding area began to smell less meaty and more methy. Who knows. Unsurprisingly, Taco Bell described the situation as "unacceptable" and fired the employee involved.
