Kim Kardashian v the classics

To celebrate the release of Selfish, we explore the unexpected art history crossovers in the selfie queen’s Instagram feed

Kim Kardashian West is the pioneer of the 21st century’s predominant art form, the selfie. According to Rizzoli, the publishers of her new book Selfish, she’s a “trailblazer of the selfie movement” who has “mastered the art” of iPhone self portraiture, and frankly, we’re inclined to agree. So much so, that we invited the mavericks behind @artlexachung to dive into her Instagram feed and explore the unexpected art history crossovers to be found within, from Kahlo to Magritte.

Selfish, released today and already a best-seller, gives a no-holds barred look at the life of the social media mogul, from her first selfie circa 1984 to the perfected images she posts to her Instagram today. Scattered with lols commentary written in Kardashian West’s own hand (like how Yeezy nicknames her particularly dark spray tans ‘Yé tans’), we see the 21st century icon with make-up and without, dressed up and undressed, sunburned and sun-kissed. It’s not to be missed. Check out the full series of crossovers in the gallery above, and follow @artlexachung on Instagram here and on Tumblr here.
