Arts+CultureNewsIntroducing marijuana for pets... no reallyOver in the US, sick dogs are being fed hash cookies to alleviate pain and sufferingShareLink copied ✔️April 14, 2015Arts+CultureNewsTextNatalie Turco-Williams Have you ever seen a dog high? Or a hamster stoned? Animals usually only indulge when their owners haven't tidied up properly after a house party, but that could be about to change. Pet food companies in the US have started selling marijuana-based snacks for animals, reports Quartz. This has led to pet owners cmaking like the scores of medicinal marijuana users across the States, by using the hemp-induced snacks to treat ailing or old animals. Sensing a gap in the market, some companies have begun selling specifc "pot for pets" treats for animals that are in pain or suffering from the onset of old age. One person explained how she was due to euthanise her dog, but one day before the appointment gave her a cookie full of weed, bought from a dispensary which had manufactured the product specifically for dogs. The dog made a full recovery and the woman cancelled her appointment. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have anticipated this,” she told Quartz. “It brought my dog back.” Julianna Carella, CEO of Treatibles, one of the companies selling these products, told Quartz that she was reluctant to discuss the medical benefits of animals eating hemp treats. “Honestly, we’re hands-off with that because we’re not doctors and it’s not our place to prescribe it in that way," she said. Despite a lack of proof or medical trials backing the benefits of pot for pets, investors remain keen. Additionally, Nevada is currently going over a proposed bill that would allow a pet owner to obtain marijuana products from a vet, as long as the vet had signed off on it. Canna-biscuits for dogsPeak Pharmaceuticals US states are falling like dominoes to legalise marijuana. Last year alone saw Maryland and Alaska move to decriminalise the drug, with New York City, Washington DC and Philadelphia all following suit. With more states catching on to legalisation, the weed economy in the US is booming. This rapid growth is obviously providing a potentially safe haven for hemp-induced snacks for animals to flourish. Given that over in the UK weed is still illegal, it's probably a long time before we're getting stoned with our dogs.
