The college men's rugby club is now taking serious heat after distributing the pamphlets, which describe women as slags and trollops while referring to "the downright depravity of fag night" and stating that "homosexual debauchery" will not be allowed on nights out. Freshers are encouraged by the club to "do your utmost to pull a sloppy bird", while female athletes are "beast-like women who play sports just so they can come out with us on Wednesdays". A helpful glossary of LSE rugby chat also translates the word "gary" as "to chat up a trollop, e.g. 'I'm putting in the "gary groundwork" with this netball slag'". One member of the group is described as "the fresher who manages to embody everything the club holds dear, debauchery, hedonism and misogyny". Another officer is reported in the document as "last seen engaging in a Mandingo fight in Salou". University rivals King's College London are also repeatedly referred to as "poly" (as in "polytechnic") and dismissed with the line "quite simply put they are scum and they will all work for us one day". So basically, the men's rugby club has managed to be sexist, homophobic, racist and classist in ten pages or less. And just in case you were left in any doubt, the cover of the leaflet features an image of a faceless woman in a bra, one breast covered by a LSE rugby jersey. Jokes on you, freshers! You thought you wanted to play sport? I'm here to tell you that sport is about relentlessly alienating more than half of society! The student union confiscated the leaflets after protests, but one student told us that there were only around ten copies left by then. "They were being distributed to anyone and everyone who went to the Men's Rugby stall, and expressed interest in joining," she said. "At least several hundred went to the fair, but I suspect the number is higher than that. I'd actually say around a thousand, although that is probably still being conservative." The LSESU Feminist Society, which sent us scans of the leaflet, said they were "incredibly disheartened to find this repulsive leaflet". "We come to university to learn, not to be objectified and dehumanised," a spokesperson told us. "We hope that this leaflet exposes the true depth of the problem within 'lad culture', and that serious systemic changes are put in place. This is not a few individuals ruining it for everybody, this is a deep problem that universities, especially elite ones, have with a culture of privilege and exclusion. Only when the problem is acknowledged, can we work towards changing attitudes." UPDATE: The ruby club has issued a "full and unreserved apology" apology for the leaflet in the LSE newspaper The Beaver, saying that it contained "inexcusably offensive and stigmatising language and we would like to make it clear that this absolutely does not reflect the views and values of our club". It continues: "LSE Men’s Rugby does not tolerate misogyny, racism, homophobia or prejudice of any description and the Club remains committed to the LSE’s equal opportunities policy. Clearly, on this occasion we not only failed ourselves, but the university which we are so proud to represent." Escape the algorithm!
