Her artwork engages with her personal experiences of heartbreak, isolation, grief, and physicality in the most subjective and visceral ways imaginable. She’s walked the Great Wall of China, submitted her body to the will of others, stripped naked, and experimentally publically ingested pharmaceuticals in pursuit of art and self-knowledge. Aside from being one of the most famed of all living artists, she may be one of the sagest and experienced individuals on the planet. If you’d like to benefit from her profound wisdom, now is your chance... This week, Serpentine Galleries are hosting a Zoom event in which the pioneering performance artist will be in conversation with their director, Hans Ulrich Obrist. Abramović has a long-standing relationship with the Serpentine, where she staged her 2014 durational piece “512 Hours” – a demanding work which involved the artist performing for eight hours a day, six days a week for 11 weeks, and received 129,916 visitors. In 2019, Serpentine Galleries also became the site of Abramović’s “The Life”, the world’s first “mixed reality” performance, created with Tin Drum’s Todd Eckert (who will also be joining the conversation). The live event, which is free and open to all, will include the opportunity for the audience to submit their questions. So, if you have a burning question to put to Abramović, this is your shot. Take a look through the gallery above to remind yourself of the artist's groundbreaking early works, and RSVP to the upcoming Serpentine Galleries event below.
