Dazed & Confused joined forces with Sagatiba, a new brand from Brazil who introduced the cachaça spirit to the UK, to give you the chance to show us your vision of the "Pure Spirit of Brasil".

This Polaroid is one of a series of images by photographer Vava Ribeiro, who was specially commissioned for this project to capture the Pure Spirit of Brazil on film. Ribeiro grew up in Rio de Janeiro, then moved to New York, and is now a regular contributor to Dazed & Confused. We asked readers to submit their photos, and if they're new, original and striking, participants were up for great prizes from Sagatiba, including £1000 worth of Canon vouchers and the chance to have work exhibited in the Dazed Gallery.

With Sagatiba as the inspiration, the competition meant a chance to highlight the energy of cachaça, a pure spirit distilled from fresh pressed sugarcane juice, was invented by the first Portugese settlers in Brazil in the sixteenth century. But it wasn't until 1922, when Brazil's modernist avant-garde organised a Modern Art Week in Sao Paolo, that cachaça emerged as a symbol of Brazilian identity, and it soon came to be considered the country's national drink. It's the third most consumed spirit in the world after vodka and soju, and is the key ingredient in caipirinha, Brazil's famed lime and sugar cocktail.
