Kevin Bollaertz, 28, charged his victims up to £230 to have the images taken down from the site, causing emotional pain and stress to those who had their privacy compromised. He faces up to 20 years behind bars and his creepy site, a moral graveyard similar to Hunter Moore's Is Anyone Up?, is now defunct. Not content with just allowing nudes to be posted on the site, U Got Posted regularly revealed the locations of people in the photographs and their social media accounts. Anyone who wanted their photos taken down were redirected to another site called ChangeMyReputation.com. Bollaertz is thought to have made tens of thousands of pounds extorting his victims. In 2013, California passed a law that made posting nude images without the subject's consent punishable with a prison term of six months. However, this law applies to those who post the photos and not website operators, so Bollaert was found guilty on different charges. His lawyer made the argument that what he did wasn't illegal, "just gross and offensive", which you know, is slightly paper thin. A victim testified in court and described the hell that Bollaert's site put her through. "It ruined my life and I'm still going through it. I lost my family," she said. "They think that I brought shame on them. My reputation is ruined." Over 25 people were named as victims in the case. 13 states in the US have laws relating to revenge porn, as prosecutors seek to clamp down on the distribution of private images that can cause personal pain. In October 2014, the UK announced that publishing revenge porn became a criminal offence in the UK, with offenders facing up to two years in jail. Increasingly, we integrate technology into our modes of intimacy, meaning that our most amorous, explicit exchanges are archived. So it's good to see people who traffic in humiliation being brought to justice. Liked this?
