Chris Cunningham Feels Love for Gucci's Flora

Frida Giannini has teamed up with Chris Cunningham and Donna Summer to unleash a field full of love.

From its original incarnation as a silk scarf specifically designed for Princess Grace of Monaco in 1966, to the sought-after accessories and ready to wear pieces designed by Frida Giannini in the 21st century, Gucci's Flora has proven to have a timeless allure.  Rediscovered by Giannini as inspiration for the new Gucci fragrance, the heritage of Flora has been transformed into a sensuous and empowering new scent.  Flora rolls out across the world from this month, launching internationally with a commercial shot by Chris Cunningham.

Cunningham's film, starring Australian model Abbey Lee, captures the seductive and ultra-feminine notes of the new fragrance while emphasising its call to strength and self confidence.  A young woman in a diaphanous Flora print dress stands waist high in the middle of a seemingly unending mass of pristine white flowers, illuminated from behind by the setting sun. Taking on the power of nature she controls the movement of the wind to bring the field to life before shape-shifting into a ephemeral, Rorschach-like butterfly of dancing fabric and golden light. Shot over four days in Latvia during July last year, the film's field was created using more than 20,000 fake flowers.

Riccardo Ruini who developed the concept for the commercial with Giannini and Cunningham, explains the evolution of the film:

“Foremost in our minds was a desire to avoid the heroine being perceived as passive or dreamy.  We wanted to portray the female as an active character who brings to life in an active way the Flora personality by controlling the nature around her. We also felt it was important to demonstrate a movement of the female from mademoiselle to empowered woman; a woman initially delicate and feminine transforming into someone stronger and more powerful. “

Having worked with David Lynch to launch Gucci by Gucci, Ruini and Giannini wanted an equally powerful creative vision at play on the new project.  Working with Italian production house FilmMaster and Ridley Scott’s RSA Films in London, Chris Cunningham took the reins to steer the commercial from concept to execution.

“The main drive was to create a deep poetic feeling rather than something simply romantic, a word that doesn’t fit in the Gucci code. The choice of using Chris Cunningham fit perfectly with this concept,” says Ruini.  “Chris added a lot to the original idea, making the whole project more majestic and cinematic. We strive to give as much creative space as possible to great directors that are involved in our projects so we avoid setting limitations at the outset. Chris developed the initial storyboard by adding his own principles and aesthetics.”

Part of that vision lay in the choice of music.  With Lynch’s film playing out against a backdrop of Blondie’s Heart of Glass, Gucci decided to stick to a 70s and 80s sound and blend Cunningham’s visuals with Donna Summer’s disco classic I Feel Love. “We wanted to go further with the sound on this film and knew of Chris’ renowned passion for music so we asked him what he felt about re-recording, producing and arranging a new working of the track. He answered by travelling to Nashville in November last year for a few days to re-record the vocals with Donna Summer,” reveals Ruini.  "Donna's track is an amazing classic and we were all blown away the first time the song was played to Chris' images."

Take your head out of your ass, Dazed, It's an advertisement for some manky perfume. Oh but it's by Chris Cunningham? objectivity out the window then! This is poorly done anyway. The way she flounces forward in relation to the flowers movement and the music just doesn't flow right at all. Then we get a bit of cheesy kaleidoscope effect, the likes of which can be seen in a thousand homemade music videos on YouTube. Finally the Natalie Portman voice over that communicates one thing: "i was directed to sound as disinterested as humanly possible". God she sounds so damn cool. Lame as fuck.

Kasimir, get out of your basement and get some pussy you fucking wanker.

Kasimir, actually you`re right...it`s a boring spot. If it wasn`t done by Cunningham (whose work, btw, I really have a lot of respect for) nobody would give a f...k about this thing...

Yes gregg, my primary motivation for commenting was the fact i dwell within a basement and get no pussy. It had nothing to do with the clear reasons i specified. Go beat off to some lens flare you fanboy nonce

Well I like it, and I like Cunningham, but I'd like it even without that knowledge.

I'm glad somebody is wise enough to team up with one of the best singing voices in the world: Donna Summer. Her "I Feel Love" is from 1978 and it still inspires even today. When you listen to her latest cd, "Crayons", you don't care that this is a 60 year old vocalist. She sounds awesome. I'm still feeling the love!

without Donna this is really not that great. her voice sounds better than ever.

  • Chris Hodgkiss (28/04/2009 13:56:25)

Dear "Jimmie" (17/04/09)...please get your facts right. I FEEL LOVE is from 1977 not 1978. It's from Donna's concept album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY, and remains (so far!!!) her only UK number 1 single. (It went to No. 6 in the USA). It is, however a BRILLIANT track, one that indeed has transcended time, and is a benchmark for all dance/house music. Who would have thought this track could still sound so fresh 30 plus years later...Donna's record company should release this new version. The commercial...it's Ok...made so much better by the track.

i saw it on tv, before i knew that chris cunningham had had any input in its making . .and i was awestruck! that kind of feeling you get when something is so amazing that it makes you feel almost exasperation and frustration . . .its certainly one of the most interesting perfume adverts made in a while. im not even fussed if at its heart its trying to flog some toilet water to me, or that the voice at the end (reckoning it's abbeys) is all blasse and im-so-beautiful-i-neednt-bother-saying-fragrance-with-much-diction . . . suspend all the irritations about techincalities and the objectivity of producing an advertisement . . im enjoying something creative in between a jamster advert and some promotion saying that holland and barrett are having a sale on evening primrose oil. it's supposed to be fun.

Really exsquisite! Donna's voice is warped at about 0:25 as it sweeps round the flowers, it reminds me of when they did that in Alice In Wonderland and sounds BEAUTIFULLY FREAKY.

Anyone know what dress this is? I assume Gucci design but any details???

I agree with Kasimir. This is a poor mans 70`s commercial. His skills are over rated but the sad thing that gets lost in all these debates is that he does have good instincts sometimes as an ARTIST. In a world where Kate Winslett can win an Oscar I think Cunningham is similar in his status as a FILM director. Over-rated. Compared to Altman, Tarpovsky, Leone etc poor. Compared to Jonze, Sophia Coppola etc he is ORIGINAL. He is a talented artist essentially not a film director. He draws beautifully, has beautiful instinct, measures his craft but falls down creating organic projects. I mean Samantha Morton etc Who always has the same expression and same eyes. (Defined by one characteristic In all her films) And he chooses her for the horrors video ? Is it a breast thing ?

Lindsay Dawn Mackenzie In Rubber Jonny apparently.

  • Shaz (09/07/2009 18:40:37)

What ? ? ? Give the guy a break he`s just making videos and gauging out womens bits and using teams of experts and talented individuals to help with making stuff probably for fun. He is not some sort of genius. But very talented at developing his career. Makes all the right moves and the wrong moves too. Ultimately who cares.

  • poohead (28/10/2009 09:23:04)

lol, I'm sure Cunningham is crying his eyes out at what you all have to say. All the way to the bank. Gotta love armchair critiques.

  • ned (21/12/2009 19:56:23)
