Teenage Takeover part 2: make your own Dazed cover using images shot by Hedi Slimane.

Text by Rod Stanley   |   Published 06 November 2008

For the January issue of Dazed, we asked everyone under 18 and living in the UK to get in touch with an idea for an article about what it means to be young and British today. With the idea landing on homepages from Myspace to Channel 4, our inboxes soon started to buckle under the strain... so, we thought we’d make even more work for ourselves by asking you to do the cover as well.

So, how will it work? All of the fashion for this issue was shot over three days by designer Hedi Slimane, on a portfolio of British youth street-cast from various locations around London. We’re now giving you a downloadable Dazed cover template and three of Hedi’s images. If you want to use one (or all) of them, go for it – they’re yours to do with as you like. And if you want to use a completely different image of your own, that’s fine, too – it’s up to you. We just want you to make an exciting, attractive and revealing Dazed cover that says something about what it’s like to be young and British today.  If you're from a different country, you're welcome to take part and just make a cover about what it's like to be young today in your country

You should be under 18 to take part. If you’re actually a 37-year-old graphic designer and live with your mum, well, we can’t stop you entering but it would be a bit weird, wouldn’t it? We’ll print our favourites in the January issue and show some of the best here on Dazed Digital as they come in, and we’ll also be blagging some nice prizes to give out randomly over the coming weeks as well. Please send all entries (JPEG format, ideally) to stephen.ll@dazedgroup.com by Thursday November 20th and be sure to include your name, age and where you live. Happy designing.

Download a ZIP file with the bits and pieces:

If you don't have Photoshop you could download GIMPshop (it's a free photo editor with an awful name).
You could even make your cover using an online photo editor like Pixlr.

Sorry Dazed but I was very sad not to even receive a rejection email back from you RE: Teenage Takeover [WRITING SECTION]. I'm 16 tomorrow, have worked with NME.com, readplatform.com and write my own blog yet I was totally ignored. Yes, I am the future of journalism but I guess tooting my own jewel-covered horn wont get me in your magazine. Good day to you, I hope that whoever wins is coherent. I understand the volume of work but I also understand that good manners are required when working via the internet

isnt it funny how hedi slimane photos are mediocre at best but because hes famous somehow that makes it extravagant? anyone can shoot what he shot but man, we all will get rejected, but he wont.

sounds like some people are quite bitter about this. everyone knows, that the media industry is about who you know. so you all clearly need to KNOW MORE PEOPLE. p.s. sooooo excited about this competition!

Rayban Collection: We received a high number of emails for the Teenage Takeover and we are in the process of replying back to everyone. Apologies! Dazed do have manners!

Don't get me wrong, the Heidi Slimane pictures are nice but they're hardly representative of teenagers in Britain. If the content is going to be reflective of young people today in the UK, surely the cover should be too? & Rayban Collection, being pretentious isn’t going to hinder your chance of being in the magazine, it’s just being a twat that’s holding you back.

Im sorry but if this issue is meant to be about what its like to be young in britain todaay then why are the pictures of 20-somethings? If you're going to do an issue on this topic you should probably think about it including images that under 18s are in and can relate to rather than images of older people. Even if these people are under 18, they certainly dont look it. Think about your audience. If its meant to be a statement issue to broaden your audience then you may want to think about attracting them. I already read your magazine, having a lame half-assed attempt at "relating" isnt going to attract more readers...

Wow great idea , but why only the British youth? Hope you got the reaction you needed. It's a pitty i live in South Africa i would have loved to take part.

josie: You're right, the models do look slightly too mature, but I think that may have more to do with the hairstyles and clothing than the actual people themselves. I don't know how old all of them are, but I know that Louis and Claude Simonon (who were included in the portfolio) are still at school. Consequently, I only found this website through being an absolute Clash freak, and, sadly, as an Australian kid it probably isn't going to help me much.
