It’s official: the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, probably the two most powerful people in the country, are law-breaking liars.

The BBC has reported that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak will be fined by the Met police for attending parties during lockdown. Johnson's wife, Carrie, is also set to be fined. As of yet, it's unclear exactly how much they have been fined – here's hoping it’s the maximum £10,000.

The Metropolitan Police have been investigating 12 gatherings in Downing Street and Whitehall where politicians and staff allegedly broke strict lockdown rules. They disclosed earlier today that they have now issued more than 50 cases for fixed penalties as a result of the probe.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister and chancellor have today received notification that the Metropolitan police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has grown a spine for the occasion and actually called for the pair to step down. “Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public. They must both resign. The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better.”

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey echoed this, tweeting: “This is a government in crisis neglecting a country in crisis. Parliament must be recalled for a vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister.”
