At the time of writing, there are almost 800,000 coronavirus cases in the US, and over 40,000 deaths, making it the worst affected country in the world. Despite these harrowing figures, protesters are demanding that the government eases lockdown restrictions – demonstrations that are supported by none other than the US president himself.
Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic so far has been unsurprisingly useless – something picked up on by a number of TikTok users, who are using the video sharing platform to visualise the absurdity of the president’s COVID-19 speeches.
In a video captioned ‘drunk in the club after covid’, TikTok user Kylie Scott ‘drunkenly’ lip syncs to a speech by Trump. “Antibiotics used to solve every problem,” she mouths, intermittently attempting to take sips of her drink, “now one of the biggest problems the world has is… the germ has gotten so brilliant that the antibiotic can’t keep up with it, and they’re constantly trying to come up with a new.”
The nonsensical speech continues: “People go to a hospital and they catch… they go for a heart operation, and that’s no problem, but they end up dying from… from… problems. You know the problems I’m talking about.”
Elsewhere, users are reinterpreting another speech by Trump, as he attempts to answer a question about how the virus may spread. “It may get bigger, it may get a little bigger, it may not get bigger at all, we’ll see what happens. But regardless of what happens, we’re totally prepared,” goes the speech. Mouthing to the president’s words while eating pizza, one user muses on the size of her bum as quarantine continues; while another takes the more obvious route: talking about his penis.
