It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Donald Trump’s star on the Walk of Fame. After a vandal-slash-national hero named Austin Clay hacked into it with a pickaxe, the City of West Hollywood has voted to have it completely removed.
“West Hollywood City council unanimously passes resolution asking the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the Donald Trump star on Hollywood Walk of Fame,” West Hollywood Mayor John Duran tweeted Monday night.
Although the city has no jurisdiction to action changes to the famous terrazzo walkway, the vote is symbolic. “The West Hollywood City Council did not pass the resolution because Donald Trump is a conservative or a Republican. Earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is an honour. When one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, Muslims, people with disabilities or women – the honour no longer exists,” Duran told CNN.
It’s an unprecedented move which the mayor has likened to destroying a horcrux. The star, which has been in place since 2007, has become symbolic during this administration having been the center of a few protests since Trump’s foray into politics.
In 2016, a border wall similar to the one he proposed to lock Mexicans out of America appeared. Then in October of the same year, James Otis dressed as a construction worker and hacked the star to bits. Otis was actually the one to bail Clay out because that’s what solidarity looks like.
