Devlin Mixtape

Dagenham-based grime MC Devlin mixes it for Dazed Digital and talks us through what each and every song means to him...

Making a lot of this years routinely generated ‘top ten to watch’ lists was the Dagenham-based grime MC Devlin who is now releasing his ‘Best of OT’ mixtape. For those of you that are a little bit shaky on your grime trivia, ‘OT’ refers to Outtakers Crew, of which Devlin is a member after first being heard, remarkably, at the age of 13. The mixtape chronicles the last few years of OT’s output including Devlin’s ‘remake’ of Roll Deep’s ‘Heat Up’ on which he demonstrated exactly what he’s made of. Showing no signs whatsoever of opting for the commercial route in order to gain wider recognition like others before (who will remain nameless), Devlin looks as if he could well be slow-burning his way right to the top. Here, Devlin gives us the track listing and talks us through each song...

Devlin Best of OT mix

1. Hello - Dogzilla: O.T Recordings vinyl release, 2005 This was the first official release from Dogzilla and O.T Recordings back in 2005.

2. Take Me Away - Devlin: Tales From The Crypt 2006 This was a very emotional track that talks about some hard times for me and close friends.

3. Longisland Freestyle - Dogzilla: TerrorScare Vol 1 2008 My boy Dogz was one of the first grime mc's to deliver his lyrics in the aggressive tone that's common place in the grime scene today. The track was made around 2004-5 and got its release on a free download in 2008.

4. Cold Outside - Ghetts Feat Devlin: Broad Street Stories 2007 I was only 15 when I featured on this track and It was the first time I'd collaborated with Ghetts.

5. Bust 1 - Ghetts Feat Devlin: Freedom Of Speech 2008 Freedom Of Speech was one of the biggest releases to come out from the grime scene so I was happy to be on the track plus it was with my mates Ghetts and producer Lewi White.

6. Sarga House - O.T Crew: The London Borough Of Barking & Dogenham Vol 1 2006 Sarga House was the first track O.T did a video for. It reminds me of the good old days when our crew was 14 members strong.

7. Ghetto Kyote Remix - Devlin: The London Borough O Barking & Dogenham Vol 1 2006 My first track played on commercial radio.

8. FU - Devlin Feat Ghetts: The Art Of Rolling E.P 2008 This track is a battle, friendly competition between friends.

9. Never Ending Story - Dogzilla 2005 This is a classic grime track from Dogzilla, his story telling style at its best.

10. Heat Up - Devin: The London borough Of Barking & Dogenham 2006 This was the start for me. This track was my introduction to the grime scene. The feedback I gave me a lot of confidence.
