A lot has happened since the lawsuit against Lizzo came to light last week, in which the singer was hit with a long list of allegations, including sexual harassment, false imprisonment, and body-shaming, by three former dancers. While Lizzo has since addressed the allegations in a public statement, the news seems to have divided the internet, with some pointing to the star’s hypocrisy with regards to body positivity, while others have flocked to her support.
Among those backing the singer is Grimes who shared a statement on Twitter yesterday (August 6). “I love Lizzo. Not saying I don’t believe ppl when bad things happen, but I had dancers mistreated on my watch in ways I didn’t find out about until way later. Mebe shit is bad. But loyalty matters to me. Lizzo was kind to me and others for a decade before she was ’cool’, and she checked in in me when no one cared,” she wrote.
She added: “I’ve only ever seen exemplary behaviour from her, especially when everyone was hating on me and she was on top of the world. There was no reason for her to check in, besides to be a good person. Just my two cents.”
“I recall when she first blew up being so happy because I’d never known such an admirable person to find fame in the music industry. I struggle to believe she would have so radically changed. tired of a culture that seeks to destroy its greatest virtues. Lizzo is amazing.”
Last week it was rumoured that Beyoncé snubbed the singer amid the abuse allegations after fans noted Queen Bey omitting Lizzo’s name from her usual shoutout during her performance of “Break My Soul (The Queens Remix)” on her Renaissance tour. This was however dismissed in a statement from Tina Knowles, who pointed out that her daughter missed out the names of other collaborators, too, including her own sister, Solange. Beyoncé has since mentioned Lizzo in following shows.
“Sometimes I have to make hard decisions, but it’s never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren’t valued as an important part of the team,” Lizzo responded to the accusations last week. “I am not here to be looked at as a victim, but I also know that I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days.” Read the statement in full below.
