The UK is getting its first-ever LGBTQ+ camping festival: Flesh, with headline electronic acts including Ellen Allien, VTSS, LSDXOXO, Rebekah, object blue, and Juliana Huxtable.
The two-dayer (May 28 and 29, 2022) is taking place among “beautiful woodland” in Springfield Farm in St Albans, a short train journey from London.
In a festival first, the line-up is fully made up of underrepresented artists, Flesh’s manifesto explains. “90 per cent of the line-up will be women, trans, and non-binary artists including a spectrum of ethnicities. As such, Flesh will address the long-term issue of male dominated festival programming. Being featured on a major festival line-up will create visibility and generate bookings for the artists involved and set an example for other promoters to follow.”
There will be a selection of queer London artists such as Angel D'Lite, Ifeoluwa, Samantha Togni, Aisha Mirza, J.Aria, plus collectives including Boudica, Pxssy Palace, Big Dyke Energy, and Inferno. Queer club night Riposte is hosting a sober tent for socialising, workshops, and panels, while the festival also promises food stalls, pop-up shops, and play areas.
The festival has also announced a scholarship programme for future musicians, giving them coaching and a support network, as well as the opportunity to perform at the event.
"Many people talk about equality in electronic music but Flesh is taking real-life action to make it happen,” the organisers say.
