Then, in 2020, she revealed that she’s actually had a full-length nightcore album in the works for some time. Now, exactly three years after posting the remix, Grimes has hinted that the collection of uptempo, pitch-shifted tunes — which has apparently expanded to more than 30 tracks — could arrive in the wake of her next album, seemingly titled Book 1. “After my albums out I have like a 35 track nightcore album I’ve been making since 2015 that I think rly needs to come out,” says Grimes in a recent statement posted to social media. “I don’t think it makes a ton of sense but it’s getting so absurdly long lol.” Of course, this doesn’t necessarily narrow down a release date, since precise details of Grimes’ follow-up to Miss Anthropocene are still TBC. Since teasing a “space opera” about a lesbian AI romance in July 2021, Grimes has shared several new tracks, including the post-Elon-Musk-breakup song “Player of Games”, TikTok demo “Digital Calypso”, and “A Drug From God” (courtesy of her virtual girl group, NPC, and DJ Chris Lake). However, it’s unclear which of these (if any) will feature on her next full-length offering. Grimes has also been mining her fans’ opinions for the visuals of the new record, posting side-by-side images to Twitter with the caption: “I can’t tell which of these is my album cover… all thots welcome.” Does that mean that she’s gearing up for an imminent release? Who knows. In the meantime, you can revisit the musician’s nightcore remix of “We Appreciate Power” below. Escape the algorithm!
