Is Grimes shading Elon Musk’s haircut?

The billionaire stars on the cover of TIME’s Person of the Year issue – featuring a home haircut, according to his ex

For some reason, TIME has named Elon Musk its Person of the Year, describing him as “the man who aspires to save our planet” – that is, unless it’s by solving world hunger. Anyway, Grimes – the richest man in history’s ex-girlfriend – has seen his cover shoot, and has maybe, possibly, shaded him about it.

Quote tweeting the cover, Grimes wrote, “And he cut his own hair for this pic too – icon”, followed by three sword emojis. Without an IRL tone, it’s hard to decipher whether the musician is actually complementing Musk’s look (probably), or suggesting that his hairdo is a hot mess. Confused responses to the musician’s tweet include the likes of, “Oh she got his ass” and “OH OKAY!!!!”, alongside, “Girl you’re not getting that child support” and “Lord, please never allow me to embarrass myself over a man like this”.

Grimes and Musk dated for three years before confirming their split in September. The pair share a child together – infamously called X AE A-XII – who was born in May 2020. Speaking about their break-up in his TIME interview, Musk said: “Grimes and I are, I’d say, probably semi-separated. We weren’t seeing each other that much, and I think this is to some degree a long-term thing, because what she needs to do is mostly in LA or touring, and my work is mostly in remote locations like this.”

The remote location Musk is talking about is near SpaceX’s Starbase site in Boca Chica, Texas, where he rents his home. “This place is basically like a technology monastery, you know,” he continued. “There are some women here, but not many. And it’s remote.” Musk said him and Grimes are still good friends.

However, if Grimes’ latest track is anything to go by, it seems she might wish they were more than just good friends. Titled “Player of Games”, many of the lyrics appear to reference her relationship with Musk, more specifically how he loves the idea of colonising Mars more than he loves Grimes. It goes: “Baby how can I compare / To the adventure out there? / Sail away to the cold expanse of space / Even love couldn’t keep you in your place.” It continues: “I’m in love with the greatest gamer / But he’ll always love the game / More than he loves me.” Sad!
