It’s been some time since we last heard from The xx. Despite whispers about new material from the band in early 2020, they’re yet to release a follow-up to 2017’s I See You, though Romy Madley Croft has since released a euphoric solo debut single, “Lifetime”.
Now though, the band has hinted that new material could be in the works. In a new, high-speed video posted to Instagram, Romy is joined by the rest of the trio — James Smith and Oliver Sim — who are shown playing together in the studio.
Last year, Romy confirmed that The xx would be working on new material sometime in the future, beyond their individual projects. “I got some messages and stuff from people saying: ‘What’s happened to The xx?’,” she told Apple Music in October. “And I just wanted to be clear with that and just say we love each other and we’re making more music together for sure.”
“But it’s nice to just encourage each other to do something different, and like I said, just learn and bring something new back,” she added. “And also I like being able to just see Oliver and Jamie do something from afar and be inspired by that.”
While they haven’t shared new material for several years, The xx also recently looked back on their earlier material — including archival shows and mixes that helped shape Jamie XX’s solo debut, In Colour — for Young’s wide-ranging online archive, Young Then.
