The song will feature on the musician’s forthcoming debut solo album, PREY//IV
Alice Glass has shared the latest single from her forthcoming debut solo album, PREY//IV. Titled “FAIR GAME”, the track is described by the former Crystal Castles frontwoman as “trauma core”, and is accompanied by similarly dark visuals. “Crystal Castles was,” the musician adds in a Twitter post. “ALICE GLASS is.”
Expanding on the new track in a statement, Glass says: “‘Fair Game’ is spoken from the perspective of the abuser. It’s a song made of actual phrases that were used in repetition to gaslight me, to intentionally keep me confused and weakened.”
“You ruined everything for us / Everybody laughs behind your back,” she sings on the track. “Where would you be without me?”
“In those moments I was completely convinced they represented undeniable facts,” she continues. “Looking back on these words now they seem flimsy and are so obviously hiding the feelings of someone else, someone who’s only power is in hurting others.”
“I hope I can help anyone listening to my music recognise the red flags of toxic relationships before they evolve into something worse, something that becomes embedded so deep it can transform you.”
“FAIR GAME” arrives ahead of Glass’ debut solo album, titled PREY//IV, which is scheduled to be released on January 28, 2022. Previously-released tracks from the upcoming record include January’s “SUFFER AND SWALLOW” and last month’s “BABY TEETH”.
Glass first embarked on a solo career back in 2014, releasing her first, eponymous EP in 2017. Several singles followed, including the 2018 song “Mine” (which came with a video starring Drag Race’s Violet Chachki) and “Cease and Desist”.
“Cease and Desist” was her first release since she accused her former Crystal Castles bandmate Ethan Kath of sexual abuse, which she says took place for almost a decade and ended in her departure from the band. “That band was everything to me,” she said in 2017. “My music, my performances and my fans were all I had in the world. I gave that up and started over not because I wanted to but because I had to.”
