Britney Spears says she’s just finished shooting a movie, titled The Idol

Apparently, her first post-conservatorship project has nothing to do with The Weeknd’s upcoming show of the same name

Britney Spears has announced that she just finished shooting a movie titled The Idol, sparking rumours among fans that she’s involved in The Weeknd’s upcoming HBO drama series of the same name

“I just shot a movie titled The Idol,” the pop star writes on Instagram, alongside an image of a cat with a glass of wine. “It’s guaranteed to have hits and a lot (of) bright pics to put in my beautiful family’s faces!”

She also offers an update on her life since the termination of her years-long conservatorship, adding: “I hope you guys are having a merry ole jolly time cause I sure am. If I go quiet from time to time, you can catch me with this cat somewhere.”

Given the coincidental timing — HBO’s The Idol officially got the green light earlier this week (November 22) — fans speculated that we’re going to see Britney star alongside The Weeknd in the show’s cast, which also includes Lily-Rose Depp and Troye Sivan

Co-created by The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, and produced by A24, The Idol follows an up-and-coming pop idol who develops a complicated relationship with a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult.

Unfortunately, however, it seems that we won’t be getting to watch Britney get indoctrinated into a fictional cult any time soon, as a source tells TMZ that she has nothing to do with the production.

According to her team, it’s also unclear what movie she’s referring to in the caption, suggesting that Britney’s version of The Idol could be a smaller-scale project that she’s working on independently.

This wouldn’t be the only DIY project that she’s announced recently, either: just last month, she also revealed that she’s working on a book about a girl who was murdered, but finds her ghost stuck in limbo. Coming out of the limboafter three years, Britney adds, the character “has a decision to make”: “Greet the same people who murdered her or create a whole new life!!!!”
